Last Saturday was very windy. We were leaving to head down to our other house to dig up some bulbs and grab some lunch at one of favorite restaurants. As we were pulling out of the driveway, I commented on our Hokie garden flag that proudly resides beside our porch. I was worried it would blow away but as soon as I spoke the words, the wind momentarily released the flag from its grip and I saw that the flag was hanging safely on the pole. We agreed it would be fine and drove away.
A few hours later as we returned, I immediately noticed the flag was gone. We circled around the neighborhood and hunted high and low for our beloved flag. We assumed it blew down to the boat dock and was swept away forever. We decided we needed to head back to Tech to buy a new flag. Besides, we were past due for a visit to our favorite place.
Fast forward to yesterday. As I was walking out of school I was nearly blown over. I called Kyle as I was driving home and we were discussing the extreme wind that was blowing through the area. It was far worse than 6 days prior when our flag disappeared. Then Kyle casually mentioned how he was running around the neighborhood when the Hokie flag blew right over to him!
He had taken the dogs around the neighborhood once then decided to run around the loop a second time. When we made it back to the house, he opted to take one more lap around. He was running down the street behind ours and saw the flag as it tumbled toward him through the ditch that runs between the lots. Between our yard, the green space connecting the lots, and the neighbor's yard, the flag had traveled nearly 3 acres before it was found!
I asked Kyle what he thought it meant and he read my mind. We need to take a trip to Tech very soon! A little getaway would be the perfect thing for the soul. And maybe we'll pick up another Hokie flag to add to our collection...just in case.
