Maybe doing three things at once wasn't the best idea. At least we can rule out using a surrogate. After speaking to her last week, we decided we would rather use the money towards the adoption. Her base fee is $20,000. In addition to that, we would have to pay the $5,000 transfer fee which would include the medications, a $2,000 fee to have a lawyer draft a contract, the cost of the predetermined c-section and medical services, and possibly extra fees if the two embryos transferred, resulted in twins. So the grand total would be at least $30,000. That amount would cover the cost of an adoption!
If I could carry a baby (or babies) for a couple going through infertility like us, I would do it for free. This girl has no idea the heartbreak and pain we face daily. If she did, the money wouldn't be necessary. She seemed nice enough, but ultimately she's making money off of infertile couples. But it isn't about biology for us anymore, so using a surrogate isn't imperative. It stopped being a biological factor in September of 2007. Now, we still have to figure out what to do with the last two embryos. Once we begin the adoption process, the infertility procedures have to stop. We are very ready to start the adoption, but we still want to transfer the last two "snowbabies." So...
We are going to do the final transfer in the next few months. And contact the two attorneys that are licensed in the two states that we will be pursuing adoption in. Once we find out one way or the other if the FET works, then we will officially start the adoption. We may do a few IUIs before we do the FET. I don't expect any of it to work, but what can it hurt? Regardless of our past luck, the two embryos are the very beginning of life and we have to care for them accordingly. I feel strongly against disposing of them and would rather pay the $5,000 to transfer them with the chances of it working, being next to nothing. They are our babies in one way or another.
Now to plant a money tree and hope for the best.
